Key Stage 3 English

Year 7

In accordance with the Secondary English National Curriculum, you will be taught how to write in a range of forms and for different audiences and purposes.  You will learn how to read for meaning and to understand how language is used in imaginative, original and diverse ways.  You will be encouraged to read widely for pleasure and information. You will also learn how to adapt your talk for a range of purposes and audiences, including more formal contexts.  The areas studied include:

  • 20th century novel – ‘The Graveyard Book’
  • Pre 20th and 20th century poetry
  • Media – the moving image – film,  advertising and newspapers
  • 20th century drama – ‘Unman, Wittering and Zigo’
  • Pre 20th century short stories
  • Shakespeare ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’

English Assessments in Year 7

  • 20th century novel – writing to analyse,
  • Pre 20th and 20th century poetry – writing to persuade, argue, advise
  • Media – the moving image – writing to argue, persuade, advise & speaking & listening
  • 20th century drama – writing to inform, explain, describe

Year 8

This year will build on the previous one and gradually introduce more challenging texts and higher expectations. In accordance with the Secondary English National Curriculum, you will be taught how to write in a range of forms and for different audiences and purposes. You will learn how to read for meaning and to understand how language is used in imaginative, original and diverse ways. You will be encouraged to read widely for pleasure and information.  You will also learn how to adapt your talk for a range of purposes and audiences, including more formal contexts.  The areas studied include:

  • 20th Century novel – The Hunger Games
  • Pre 20th Century Literature – Sherlock Holmes
  • Shakespeare Play – ‘A Comedy of Errors’
  • Non-Fiction Pre 20th Century poetry
  • Media – newspapers, journalism and film.
