Just before the half-term break, Year 12 and Year 13 Germanists travelled to Berlin with Frau Probodziak and a special guest appearance from Frau Cooley and Herr Henley! They stayed for 5 days in a charming hostel very close to the city centre, with a very generous breakfast buffet every morning.
Frau Probodziak had planned a “volles Programm” for the trip, which included a large dose of German 20th century history, through visits to and tours of the Stasi prison ‘Hohenschoenhausen’, the Jewish Museum, the DDR (GDR) Museum, the German Reichstag, and the Topographie des Terrors (Topography of Terror). The tours were in a mixture of German and English to maximise understanding, but also to expand vocabulary and present more exposure to the German language.
To break up the museum visits and tours, the students also did a fair bit of shopping on the famous shopping street, Kudamm, home to the ‘KaDeWe’ shopping mall. They also visited the shops in the trendy ‘Hackescher Markt’ area, and stopped off at various chocolate shops on a long walk through the centre of town, ‘Mitte’. To round off the shopping experience, students also visited the very popular ‘Mauerpark’ market, where they got an authentic Berlin flea market experience.
One of the highlights of the trip – although there are many to choose from – was the night at the Mexican restaurant, which had a vintage bowling alley, that students and teachers enjoyed for several hours.
