The new ripple tank that was donated to the Physics Department by the PA has proved extremely popular with students, and provided them with concrete evidence of some complex wave phenomena. The device consists of a vibration generator, which generates waves on the surface of water. This is illuminated by a light source, and projected via a mirror onto a diffuse screen. If required the pattern can be frozen by strobing the light source. The photographs demonstrate double slit interference and diffraction around an edge. Using water waves to demonstrate will provide the basis for the students to extend their understanding to examples using wave types such as electromagnetic waves or sound. The Physics department would once like to thank the PA for their generosity.
