The Summer Mid-Term Concert on Thursday 13 June was a lovely, relaxed event, showcasing a selection of solo and small-ensemble items from Olavians of all ages. Once again, pianists in abundance took to the stage and impressed the audience with a diverse range of pieces, executed with impressive technical skill. Among them, Kenji and Ademofe gave particularly enjoyable renditions of virtuosic music by Chopin. Gautam’s sensitive interpretation on the classical guitar of Bach’s music was full of expression and very moving. Eric’s performance of the first movement of Kabalevsky’s Violin Concerto was equally remarkable, handling some very demanding music with notable technical skill. Alfie took jazz standard “The Way You Look Tonight” by Fields and Kern and stunned everyone there present with his extemporisation on the classic. He also arranged the infamous theme from “Eastenders” for a band formed of students in 7L, which was very entertaining. To complete the programme, Summer Strings, Guitar Ensemble and Improv Ensemble all offered their own contributions, the hard work from their weekly rehearsals paying off and highlighting what great outcomes can be achieved when we collaborate.
