18 July - Churchill Chartwell Public Speaking Competition

Two Olave’s teams competed at Chartwell on a lovely sunny day in Westerham. Victoria was awarded a special prize for her ‘impassioned use of imagery and rhetorical devices’ in an excellent, well researched speech about change and social cohesion. The Y12 team were confident and poised using pause dramatically to hold the audience’s attention in a palpable moment of reflection. The Y10 team spoke with ‘clarity, calmly making a connection with their audience’ in an erudite, detailed and amusing speech that impressed the judges. Some memorable lines included a warning against a dull, safe ‘steady street’ and being ‘puppets of fortune and change’.

Both teams did well and learned a great deal about by moving outside of their comfort zones and taking on a challenge. Well done to all!
