The Classics Department completed a very successful trip to Greece during Activity Week Two. Although we went to many of the traditional sites such as Mycenae, Epidauros, Olympia and Athens, we went much further afield this year .
We went to Preveza which is the site of Nikaiopolis to see where the Battle of Actium took place and the city Augustus had built to commemorate his victory. Perhaps the great discovery of the trip was the planned visit to Kassopi, a Hellenistic city built on a Hippodamian grid in the 4th century BC . There were stunning remains of an Odeion, a theatre and a Katagogion. We also visited Thermon a small town with the remains of a north-south aligned temple similar to that of Bassae.
