On Thursday 29th January, the Political Economy Society welcomed George Buckley, Chief UK Economist at Deutsche Bank. The talk, which was held in the Great Hall, attempted to answer the question; ‘Will Central Banks ever raise interest rates?’. Mr Buckley gave an excellent overview of the UK economy, looking specifically at rates of inflation and the causes of the current spout of disinflation. All of the students found the talk incredibly interesting and informative and it was great to hear the views of such a well renowned economist within the industry. A question and answer session followed, with students posing questions such as ‘Is the Eurozone’s QE programme too little too late?’ and ‘What are the implications of a Greek exit from the Euro?’. We would like to say a special thanks to Mr Buckley for giving up his time and would love to see him return to the school again in the future.
Next week, the society welcomes Heidi Alexander, the Labour MP for Lewisham and the following week, our long standing Olavian, Mr John Burston.
