The St Olave’s Jazz Band was invited to perform at the masquerade ball of The Worshipful Company of Actuaries Charitable Trust on Wednesday 8 February at the Underglobe, Southwark.  Sharing the stage that evening with such professional entertainment acts as Old Hat Jazz, Dance Equation and stand-up comedian-mathematician Matt Parker, our students did themselves and their school proud.  The event took the form of a black-tie evening of dining and arts entertainment with a view to fundraising for Tearfund, so the musicians caused quite a stir, dressed in their signature Hawaiian shirts.  The assembled throng of fellow maths appreciators seemed to be delighted by the musical numbers offered by our band, inspiring a handful of them to leave their dinner tables, neglect the mountain of cakes and pastries and instead take to the floor and dance.
