At the initiative of the Council of Europe, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated in all European countries on 26th September for more than a decade now and the MFL Faculty at St. Olave’s honoured this event with special activities taking place throughout the week. We started off on Monday with all forms completing a quiz of 26 rather tricky questions in English on European languages (the winner being Kayanta in 13T with an astounding result of 25/26 – no sources permitted!). On Tuesday, Yr 11 students of French and Spanish talked about their respective Yr 10 residential trips to Normandie and Murcia – all in perfect French/Spanish! The canteen served French and Spanish delicacies such as Courgette Pasta and Abóndigas afterwards. On Wednesday, Yr 11 students of German spoke about their adventures on the Yr 10 Rheinland residential, all in fluent German! Yet another highlight was Adrian’s video clip of the German Exchange to Starnberg - a technical masterpiece which made everyone in the audience shed a tear (of laughter) – or possibly two! We were subsequently spoiled with German meatloaf (based on Frau Cooley’s recipe of German Frikadellen) and Sauerkraut for lunch. The week was rounded off with quizzes in French/German/Spanish in language lessons and our multilingual Chaplain teaching us some Russian in Friday’s assembly. Nous adorons les langues!/Wir lieben Sprachen!/¡Nos encantan los idiomas!
