Last week was a spectacular week for the Fives National Championships at Eton College. A record 666 pairs entered the Championships this year, including schools from Malaysia and Switzerland!
In the U14s: Yohann Bleuven and Isaac Jochim were 2nd Seeds and despite a tense, 4-set match, they emerged as runners up. In the U13s however, Jeffrey Akintolu and Isiah Akpovwa played brilliantly to claim victory and become National U13 Champions.
In the U16s it just was not the day for Sachin Balaji and Louis McLean, where, despite being 1st Seeds and having beaten their opponents from Eton 3-0 recently, they lost 3-0 in the Final to take the runners up prize.
However, in the main event - extraordinary Open competition – our 1st and 6th seeds both reached the Final - only the 3rd time this century that a single school has done this. En-route they demolished the opposition from Eton, Harrow, Berkhampstead, Highgate, Shrewsbury and others. In a thrilling 5-set match, playing some magical Fives, Kosi Nwuba and Tomas Gallagher just beat Morgan Pugh and Kieran Walton to claim victory and the title of UK Open Fives Champions 2017.
Fantastic! Many thanks to Howard Wiseman and Dominique Redmond for their commitment and inspiration to all of our players.
