It is not every day that we have a Nobel Laureate and a Royal Medal winner in school, so it was no surprise that around 100 people packed the Chapel on 15th October to hear Sir Tim Hunt speak in the Olavian Lecture Series II. His fascinating talk entitled ‘Staying alive: the secret of cell division’, traced the history of our understanding of cells, mitosis, the key regulators in the cycle, cyclin and much more. To the befuddlement of mathematicians present, he managed to convince us that cells have to divide to multiply… Look out for the next in the series, on Thursday 13 November, when Dame Mary Archer will be presenting ‘The science of good health.'
