The St. Olave’s Jazz Band took part in BYMT’s Bromley Schools Festival of Music, hosted on Thursday 22 February, this year at the Churchill Theatre Bromley. Our musicians performed “Spain” by Chick Corea, followed by “Sing Sing Sing” by Louis Prima, two jazz favourites with the sort of exciting rhythmic energy that has everyone clapping and dancing along. During both pieces, the players exhibited some fine ensemble performing. There were also some excellent solo moments for clarinet, saxophone and percussion, which were also particularly impressive. If the enjoyment in the faces of the primary school pupils on-stage during the Jazz Band’s performance weren’t enough evidence, the cheering from the enthusiastic audience at the end confirmed exactly how much people appreciated the group.
Congratulations go to all participants, with thanks too to the friends of our school who lent a hand in the brass section. All of this of course would not be possible without the superb leadership of Nick Beston, who has looked after the band now for many years and hopefully will do so for years to come.
