Year 9 artists attended the newly opened and eagerly anticipated exhibition, ‘Aftermath: Art in the Wake of WWI’ at the Tate Britain. Students sketched from paintings, drawings, and sculptures by artists such as Paul Nash, Kurt Schwitters and Picasso. Many students were asked about their drawings by members of the public and were able to discuss the narrative behind each piece with confidence and insight. In the afternoon, students continued to impress by presenting on pieces they had researched from the permanent collection. Being able to teach each other about the works of artists such Hockney and Constable from the original paintings themselves was a valuable experience and a challenge they rose to with enthusiasm and maturity. We look forward to seeing how the trip will influence their future artwork.
