11 July - Year 8 English activities during AW2

Y8 joined the English Department to make mini documentaries at the Imperial War Museum, London in AW2. They captured short films focussing on the Secret War and the First World War. We learned how to select and edit stories and make them relevant to today. The boys chose espionage heroes and soldiers who had been awarded the VC to create memorable and moving films.

Using stories and artefacts from the visit the boys then composed some shape poems and invented new literary movements. Making up the rules and titles they wrote stories and poems in the style of their new creations.

Y9’s News Broadcast Day challenged small groups to make editorial decisions matching stories to their target audiences. Boys has to then write and record their bulletins throughout the morning. They demonstrated excellent team working skills, intelligent decision making and some thoughtful and accurate writing.
