Gold DofE Assessed Expedition - July 2026

Our Year 12 and 13 Duke of Edinburgh students recently completed a successful expedition in Eryri (Snowdonia), undertaking a challenging route through one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the UK.

One of the highlights of the expedition was an overnight wild camp beside a stream. Students cooked, camped and purifyed their own water from the stream. Living independently in such a remote environment gave everyone a real appreciation for the skills and self-reliance required to thrive outdoors.

The group also spent time exploring and learning about one of the area's reservoirs. Students developed their understanding of how these impressive engineering projects provide both a vital water supply and hydroelectric power for local communities. Students devoted further time to learning about the environment and the communities that call North Wales home. They explored the complex relationship between tourism and conservation, investigating how the region seeks to benefit economically from the many visitors drawn to its landscapes while also protecting the natural beauty and ecosystems that make Eryri such a special place. These discussions helped students develop a deeper appreciation of the challenges involved in balancing environmental stewardship with economic development.
The expedition involved some particularly impressive mountain walking. Students successfully climbed both Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr, two of Eryri's most striking peaks.

These rugged mountains present a significant challenge and are summits that relatively few Duke of Edinburgh groups attempt as part of their expedition routes. Reaching these summits was a tremendous achievement and a testament to the group's fitness, determination and careful preparation. They are rightly proud of what they accomplished.

The expedition was a great success. The students demonstrated resilience, curiosity and excellent teamwork throughout, whilst embracing every opportunity to learn from the landscape around them. They should be extremely proud of their achievements, and we congratulate them on completing such a memorable and demanding expedition.
