2024 Imperial College Science in Medicine School Team’s Prize.
Following on from reporting the success of the Olavian team's entry on Vasculitis achieving joint winners, there have been further updates that we are now delighted to share with you.
Our brilliant teams of Year 13 scientists, artists and engineers have once again been very successful in this annual competition organised by Imperial College, London.
Earlier this year, almost 100 Year12 (now Year13) students took part in our internal science department competition to select the 5 teams who would submit an entry in this year’s competition. Working in teams of up to 6 students, they designed an ePoster which illustrated a strategy for combining science with biomedicine to improve health and reduce deaths and disabilities. The 5 categories were as follows:
- Global Health
- Cardiovascular Health
- Scleroderma & Raynaud’s Disease
- Lung Disease
- Vasculitis
Imperial College received around 235 entries across the 5 categories from about 140 UK schools and colleges.
4 of our 5 teams were shortlisted for their respective final which involved giving a Power Point presentation lasting seven minutes, followed by three minutes of questions from a large judging panel which included academics from Imperial and representatives from the charities sponsoring the prizes.
Our students gave excellent presentations and answered challenging questions with confidence.
The Vasculitis team were joint winners. Congratulations to Taha Cheema, Saneeka Chitkara, Patrick Williams, Parnika Doranalli and Praneel Agrawal.
The Scleroderma & Raynaud’s Disease team were joint runners up. Congratulations to Barayturk Aydin, Ethan Chan, Adora Edobor and John Prineas.
The Cardiovascular Health team were also joint runners up. Congratulations to Sonali Prasad, Shreya Chawala, Sruthelaya Kiran Kumar and Ioana Cretu.
The Global Health team were shortlisted for their final. Congratulations to Riya Tandon, Tristan Ly, Sophie Chou Polis and Vaishnavi Rajput.
As a result of this success, St. Olave’s has been awarded £5000 to be spent on science related activities and the students will receive certificates and a mentoring session from an academic at Imperial College. Details of their innovative ideas can be found on the Imperial College website.
Huge congratulations to our impressive Year 13 students.
