Savoy Choristers sing at St George’s Chapel Windsor Castle – Tuesday 21 March 2023

In the presence of His Majesty King Charles III, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and other members of the Royal Family, the Choristers of the King’s Chapel of the Savoy joined forces with those of St George’s Chapel to sing for a Service of Praise, Remembrance and Dedication. The several hundred members of the Royal Victorian Order who filled St George’s Chapel on this occasion are all recipients of special honours for loyal service to the Royal Family.

For over 70 years, St. Olave’s has provided the treble choristers for the King’s Chapel of the Savoy, one of the four Chapels Royal. Every four years we have the privilege of being part of this special occasion to commemorate and celebrate the contributions of RVO members past and present. So has the size of the Order’s membership grown that, though the Savoy Chapel is officially the Chapel of the Royal Victorian Order, the service is held in the larger building of St George’s.

The choristers deserve much admiration for their part in such an important occasion: singing beautiful choral music at the highest standard. Our ten-strong group of mighty voices blended brilliantly with the other singers in music by Howells and Brahms. The choir also led impressive congregational singing of four rousing hymns which reverberated through the vast building.

Congratulations go to the Savoy Choristers, not just for their musical role, but also for conducting themselves in an exemplary manner throughout the visit. We would like to thank St George’s Chapel Director of Music James Vivian, FRCO, Hon FNCM and the Savoy Chapel’s Master of the Music Philip Berg, MVO, FRCO, ARCM, who directed the choral items. Assistant Director of Music of St George’s Chapel Luke Bond, ARCO was responsible for superb organ music during and after the service. Charlotte Manley, CVO, OBE (St George’s), Richard Buck (Savoy Chapel) and various staff at St George’s School Windsor Castle all took great pastoral care of our own choristers and staff as visitors in Windsor for which we are also very grateful.

This was an occasion which will last a lifetime in our memories.
