SMFTS Parliamentary Action Day
Hassan (Y10) and Om (Y11) in their roles as Send My Friend to School Campaign Champions had an exciting day in Parliament on Tuesday, advocating for Education in Emergencies and having their voices heard at the heart of UK democracy.
They took part in a roundtable with the Minister of State (Minister for Development) and Minister of State (Minister for Women and Equalities) The Rt Hon Anneliese Dodds MP, where critical steps for lasting change were explored. They also met with senior civil servants from the Girls' Education Department, who left having had some thought provoking questions posed to them by the students.
They also met with MPs, including the former First Minister for Scotland, Jack McConnell, who is now a Lord to raise awareness about the urgent need to support and invest in education in crises. Then, they were invited to knock on the door of 10 Downing Street and deliver a letter about the campaign for Sir Keir Starmer on behalf of the Campaign Champions.
Amongst the advocacy and campaigning, students also took time to have a personalised tour of the Houses of Parliament from MP Bambos Charalambous and got to sit in the public gallery and watch Lisa Nandy, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport announce the UK National Youth Strategy.
The students have done such a brilliant job in their campaigning inside and outside of school, and their time as Campaign Champions is now ending for the year. If you would like to learn more about the campaign, please follow @sendmyfriend on Instagram for more information.
